Cosmo UK Fulfills My Life Dream of Making a Mascara Encyclopedia

One day, when I win the lottery, I will be able to do the best makeup mega-comparisons ever. Until then, I will sit in sadness while people with more monetary resources than I have independently come up with my brilliant ideas. Great minds think alike, right?

I’ve talked before about my dream of creating a mascara encyclopedia, where you can compare different mascaras on the same eyelashes to find the effect you actually want. Cosmopolitan UK pulled this off, testing 100 mascaras side-by-side on one of their beauty editors. It’s not a perfectly done comparison. For example, they didn’t have a “control”, showing her non-mascara’d eye. There are also some pretty obvious typos (such as mixing up NYC and NYX, two very different brands). I also wish they had organized in some coherent way (by price, alphabetically, something). Still, it’s better than my idle fantasies. You can see their article by clicking here.

A11 Lengthening, defining and Volumising Waterproof MascaraIt seems to me that this kind of image gallery could be mined for much more information. Perhaps one could do a regression that demonstrates what kind of mascara characteristics are associated with volume, length, or clumpiness. Alternatively, one could take data on the attractiveness of these lashes and see if mascara price correlates with a more attractive product. Any ideas about what you would like to see done with these photos?

7 comments:

1. What I would really like is volume, length and curl represented on 3 axes in multidimensional scaling. I like visual representations!

2. Will you build me a Star Wars-esque hologram machine to help me present my data?

3. Poor girl! Look at how red her eyelids are by the 100th mascara!

Comparing the names of some of the products with the respective pictures, i think the magazine could have easily made an analysis of branding vs. reality, but i have the feeling that they were trying very hard to not offend anybody so they left their “reviews” without an actual review.

4. Yeah, Cosmo might not be my #1 pick for unbiased info on brands…

5. I have no ideas of my own, but I love your ideas of figuring out a cost/quality ratio and what ingredients tend to produce what results.

6. My comment got lost so I’ll make this one shorter:

7. Great idea!

8. Got drawn to ‘defining’ ones (= ‘not noticeable’). Not surprising.

9. For bolder looks, got drawn to Rimmel’s mascaras. I was surprised that a certain brand ended up attracting me consistently.

A lot of these aren’t available in our market (and a lot of those that are aren’t in the encyclopedia, of course), but it’s nice that the one I like is.

(Sorry for butchering English.)

10. A lot of this has got to do with application technique. #97 has recently dethroned my previous HG as my favorite mascara ever, and I assure you, my lashes look thick and lush when I use it, nothing like that dry spidery mess. I also believe what you have to start with determines what you end up with. Maybe it only works so well for me because my lashes are already long enough, full enough, and just don’t need curl or volume so much as they just need color to begin with.
